Five Ways To Be A Better... Exerciser

October 31, 2016, by Lana L.

I've been a big fan of exercise for most of my life.  When I was younger, getting a workout was easy, and if I had a basketball court or a bike I was happy.

As I got older, exercise became more difficult.  I was stuck in the "45 minutes of cardio" mindset. Finding time was an issue, I was bored, and I wasn't getting the results I wanted.   A few years ago, I finally changed my perspective and my habits, and became a better exerciser. Here's how you can too:

  • Give HIIT (or high intensity interval training) a try.  HIIT involves a series of short, intense bursts of exercise with rest in between.  It gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time.  HIIT increases your metabolism, and doesn't require any special equipment.  Try one of these workouts for beginners.
  • Lift weights.  I resisted weight training for years, but it really is crucial to overall fitness, especially as we age. Just two sessions a week will strengthen your bones and boost your metabolism.  You'll build muscle, which burns more calories, and feel all around stronger.

  • Try something completely new.  Recently, my husband and I started going to Yoga together. In the beginning, we had no idea what we were doing. But after just a few months, we've noticed a huge improvement in our flexibility and balance.
  • Do something fun.  Exercise doesn't have to be a chore.  Join a Zumba class, or go cycling, biking or rowing. Anything that gets your heart rate up and uses your muscles counts.

  • Reset your mind..  Once I quit thinking of exercise as a chore that had to be done to lose or maintain weight, I started enjoying it again.  Now my focus is on feeling strong and staying healthy.  By being a better exerciser, I'm finally seeing the results I've wanted all along.
