Behind the Scenes- Blogger life

March 20, 2016, by Deena @Shoes to Shiraz

The nearing of Easter means I need to cover the last aspect that I have been concentrating on during my Lenten journey.  I've talked about the physical, spiritual and the mental self and today, the week leading up to Easter is time to talk about what I have been doing to challenge myself intellectually.

And because blogging is what occupies most of my time and is what makes me learn, I thought I would give you a behind the scenes look about what goes on in my blogging world.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday:

Compose my posts for Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  2-4 hours, depending on my creativity levels.  I always do this while watching Parenthood and with a glass of wine.

Comment on any linkup I participated in, usually 2 to 3 other bloggers.  I like doing this because then I am seeing how other creative women are working and it's fun when you can make a connection with someone.  I have three style bloggers I have been really enjoying following and am getting tons of inspiration from, you should check them out - le style rouge, I do deClaire, Lipgloss and Lace.   30 mins- 1 hour.

Send out any info for the upcoming week for the Blended Blog: linkup code and what is going on in the upcoming week: 30 minutes.

Monday- Thursday:

From 6:30- 7 am I read all the blogs I follow (see the navigational menu above- Blogs I love) and comment if I have something to say.  If I have time, then I also link up my blogs to the link party things (see navigational menu above- Where I link up)

When I get home from work I try to comment on any link up I've participated in and respond to any comment I've received whilst making supper.

On Tuesdays or Thursdays in the afternoon I do my outfit pictures for whatever upcoming outfit post there is.  I sometimes feel ridiculous being alone with a tripod and remote until I convince myself that I'm a photographer, scouting out photo locations and lighting.

Work on any blog goals I give myself (this week: update my About Me page and finish adding to my Blog Roll)

Goals and such:

I started blogging because I wanted to keep track of our story and I print off a book every year.  I am sure some day, my kids will love reading a detailed account of their childhood.  When I started blogging I had no clue how big the blogging community was and growing my blog was not an interest.  I have kinda changed my focus, less on the kids, more on me and that is okay so far.  My blog has grown from 200 page views a month to 8000 and I have no clue where I'm going to go from here.  I enjoy blogging, but also, I get easily overwhelmed: the blogging community is SO big. So many people, doing the exact same thing, I often wonder what the point is.  But then I have to remember to focus on what really brings me joy: just doing my thang. I have "met" some pretty wonderful women and connected with readers and that, by far, has been the greatest gift.  So who knows.  I find myself easily caught up in the momentum of grow, grow, grow but then I quickly get overwhelmed and start despising the process instead of feeling inspired and joyful when I think blog.  Here are a couple of the things I am letting go of:

A blog Facebook page- I just don't see the point plus it is WAY too much work to get likes

Linking my Instagram to what I'm doing on my blog- branding? No. Thank. You.  I don't want to be like every other blogger with their crisp white images and perfectly styled life.  Nope, you are going to get 100% (un) filtered me and it likely won't have anything to do with my blog.

Newsletters and emails- I don't like emails, so I won't do something I don't enjoy!  Truth is, I usually unsubscribe to any email I get.  Although, there are a couple blogger emails that I genuinely enjoy getting because they its just an extension of their blog and contains their wonderful voice.

So really, my goals right now are to just go with the flow. I like collaborating with other bloggers and I enjoy connecting and being inspired.    We'll keep on keeping on and see where that takes us!  I am very excited to have switched to Wordpress and look forward to all the learning that it requires. I can't wait to get into that HTML and CSS!

Happy Monday

-D

  1. I'm thankful everyday that we both started blogging, because otherwise I wouldn't know you and your wonderfulness. I really need to start working on blog posts on the weekends - I'm usually scrambling the night before to get them done.

Wow, I really enjoyed reading this... I love to hear how other bloggers do it. I struggle every day with keeping up with my blog. It seems like you have a really good process. I have to agree with you on FB, it is really not worth the time. I don't know why I still keep up with mine! lol! I also like that you work on all of your blog posts for the week in one big chunk of time WHILE enjoying TV and wine! Go you!

  3. Great post, Deena. I like hearing what others are doing - and how they divide up their time and blog. I am with you on newsletters - I rarely read them.

  4. this is a great post, I loved reading it, and getting inside your head on how you approach blogging. Good for you for 'doing you' and what makes you happy. It's funny that we all have the same insecurities too, and doubts. I like that you have a routine. I need routine...and wine, also parenthood.

  6. It's fun to hear how other bloggers schedules function. I try to always reply to comments from the previous day by the next morning and write as many posts as I can on the weekend but outside of that it is a rodeo around here :).

  8. Nice to see how you manage it all friend! I don't know how you do it! I'm struggling over here to keep up. And the fact that you can write 3 blog posts in two hours, I worship you or I need to manage my time better, hehe.

  9. OH and YES to the IG thing, just let me post what I want, I don't need a brand for IG...geez! Why do they have to make EVERYTHING so difficult!

  10. I always find reading other people's schedules interesting. I love that you read blogs while making dinner-I do the same thing! And online shop too in another tab! Haha! Yay for you for staying true to yourself and your blog. I struggle with staying updated with facebook. You've got me thinking I should drop it, too. And thank you so much for mentioning my blog as one you follow. It means so much to hear that and it made my day!

  12. I definitely agree, what good luck we all had meeting up in that style challenge!

  13. I also love hearing what others do, sometimes it feels like everyone else is having success and it's great to have people to hang out with IRL who blog and who can understand the crazy it takes :)

  14. I envy the bloggers that seem to just do their thing and not care about all the everything else!

  15. One always needs wine. Also- it's so weird how we can all doubt ourselves for such ridiculous reasons!

  16. There are a few newsletter that serve a good purpose, but I just feel like there is JUST SO MUCH to do.

  19. High fives. Also...the more a post entails the longer it takes...so sometimes that 2-4 hours can be twice a weekend. I don't like those weekends.

  21. You are inspiring to make better use of my time. Yep, that was a goal of mine this year. So far...fail!

  22. I always enjoy your blog and your voice and I love how true to yourself you are.
I find I have gotten overwhelmed lately trying to do all the blog things and need to just focus on doing things that bring me joy.
Also loved reading your schedule because making a schedule for my 'blog-time' has been on my to-do list. I find when I don't know what I'm doing I easily lose focus and get distracted.

  24. So nice to see how your blog week looks! :) I admire you for keeping it real on instagram too. I know the perfectly posed, filtered and arranged just so photos you're referring too, and I find myself unfollowing accounts that end up like that, I prefer using instagram as cute cat/dog photos and some style inspiration, haha!

I should probably try map out more of my blog week so I have some consistency with it, it's a bit all over the place as it depends on how long the toddler naps for at the moment! ;)

  25. Hahaha. I was thinking the same thing when I was reading your post. Watching TV and writing would be a complete challenge and then adding the wine would not end well. I used to do that sometimes while working on papers or other teacher stuff, not so good. Deena, I did enjoy reading your post and I was overwhelmed just looking at the hours you dedicate. Your blog is a wonderful representation of who you are as a wife, mom, teacher, woman and the everyday things you grapple with. Thank you for sharing.

  29. So thoughtful. I appreciate you showing how you stay on top of connecting and getting things done. The Facebook page really does seem like a lot of work for minimal results. Also, I looked up my stats on Alexa.com (a friend recommended I do this) and my 5 highest traffic referrers aren't even any of my social media threads... So why am I pouring my time into them? 🙈
